The Experiment
I have been told, and have experienced once or twice, the perils of trying to grow food in the Florida summer. But that was then. I think I understand something more about how to combat the potential summer killer: the sun. So...this is now. I will attempt to grow a garden this summer at home.
Yesterday and today the kids and I planted 28 different starters, mostly tomato, pepper, and squash. We already have five tomatoes, five nasturtiums, a scraggly okra, and two parsley plants transplanted from the Lakewood Peace Patch Garden. I will avoid root crops, I think, but I still have more greens, corn, beans, and sunflowers to get started.
I am afraid that I will quickly run out of space with some of this. But it is an experiment. The soil is 100% compost. I made a shade out of screen today, but I'm not convinced it is a long term solution if the direct sunlight is too much. Fortunately, the whole planting is to be done in pots atop a platform and can be strategically moved if necessary.
